But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism. Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? You are like children sitting in the market and shouting to each other, "We played the flute, but you would not dance! We sang a funeral song, but you would not cry!" John the Baptist did not go around eating and drinking, and you said, "John has a demon in him!" But because the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, you say, "Jesus eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners." God's wisdom, however, is shown to be true by all who accept it." Jesus compared the people of his time with children playing a game of weddings and funerals. One group was arguing with another group. One group said that the other group would not play a game of weddings. So neither would they pretend to play a game of funerals. In the same way, people did not want to accept either John or Jesus. John the Baptist led a very strict life. People said that he was crazy. Jesus enjoyed normal social occasions. People said that he was too fond of food and drink. Moreover, he mixed with the wrong kind of people. Both John the Baptist and Jesus were doing what was right for them at that time. Wise people knew that. The people of Jesus' time were not satisfied with anybody! How much more the people of our generation who are never satisfied with the joyful sound of the Gospel and reject Christ's Grace and Mercy because of religion and traditions. But then there are those who preach the doctrine of repentance and hell and because of the love of sin and rebellion many also reject the truth and standard of Gods Living Word. LORD forgive us! Too many times we reject the flute that could fill us with the joy of our salvation. And other times when the altar call is made to confess our sins and receive forgiveness we would not even cry for your presence. Praise God one day soon the streets of heaven will be filled with boys and girls playing there. The children of God dancing and crying out praises to God our Father and our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ!
