Respect God, and live long! Be evil, and die soon! Fear of the LORD lengthens one’s life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish. The way of the LORD is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. If you have lived long enough you have seen how meaningless life can be, including the death of good young people and the long life of wicked people. Although a sinner does evil a hundred times and still lives long, yet I also know that it will go well with those who fear God, who are reverent in His presence. So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself? On the other hand, don’t be too wicked either. Don’t be a fool! Why die before your time? Pay attention to these instructions, for anyone who fears God will avoid both extremes. Keep to the middle of the road. You can do this if you truly respect God. Say today: I know that everything God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that people should fear Him. Everything you were taught can be put into a few words: Respect and obey God! This is what life is all about.
